Google plans a data center at Otanmäki in Kajaani, part of the €13 billion it announced in September 2026 for sites in Kajaani, Vaala, Muhos and Hamina. Kajaani's council has approved a 1,870-hectare master plan for Otanmäki–Humpinsuo that includes land owned by Google's Finnish company, Tuike Finland; the next step is a detailed plan for about 392 hectares east of Otanmäki. Google says permits can be sought once the environmental impact assessment is finished.
A week after the announcement, the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation accused Google of suspected illegal clear-cutting at Otanmäki and Muhos. "Either this is gross incompetence by Google's Finnish project company, Tuike Finland Oy, or gross disregard for Finnish law, or at worst both," said its chair, Hanna Halmeenpää. Google says the trees were felled fully in line with the Forest Act. The state Permit and Supervision Authority has asked Kajaani, Muhos and Tuike Finland for explanations; "all the inquiries are unfinished," said its unit head, Sari Myllyoja.
Two other projects are already being built. The trading firm XTX Markets is building a 22.5-megawatt data center about 5 kilometers from the town center, due in 2026, and plans four more on the same site, an investment it says could top €1 billion; it says it will give its waste heat away free. At Renforsin Ranta, a former paper machine hall is becoming the home of the LUMI-AI supercomputer; it was topped out on September 3 and is due to open at the end of 2027.
