Data centers in KwaZulu-Natal: 1 project mapped
eThekwini's city council voted in late February 2026 to sign a memorandum with a group of South Korean companies, called the Korea South Power Consortium, to explore an AI data center south of Durban near Amanzimtoti. The city's own briefing report put a possible cost of $3 billion to $10 billion and twice mentioned 400 megawatts of power, but the city says no final decisions have been made and the figures are not confirmed.
The 5-hectare site sits at the mouth of the Lovu River, close to the Amanzimtoti cable landing station for the 2Africa undersea cable. Ward 97 councillor Andre Beetge, who abstained on the vote, said councillors learned of the deal only two days before it reached the council agenda and that the details were "conspicuously absent." He said the land lies in an environmentally sensitive coastal area and that the city had just redirected money meant for a nearby substation upgrade.

eThekwini has since said the vote approved only exploratory and feasibility work, not the project itself, any infrastructure commitment or technical specification. "No final decisions have been made regarding the electricity requirements of the proposed facility," the city said, adding that "any figures currently circulating publicly, including specific megawatt estimates, should not be regarded as confirmed." It has not said how much water the plant would need or who would build it.
The province's existing data centers are far smaller. Teraco's Durban DB1, in Riverhorse Valley, doubled its capacity in 2023 to 2.2 megawatts of critical load with direct access to three subsea cables. Hurricane Electric also runs a data center on Oppenheimer Road in the city center.
