Microsoft can restart building server halls four and five at its Tuna data center in Sandviken, Gefle Dagblad reported on April 10, 2026, after work stood still for more than a year. Microsoft runs a cluster of data centers between Gävle and Sandviken, at Tuna in Sandviken and at Ersbo and Stackbo in Gävle municipality, with plans for five halls per site. The Sandviken center officially opened in November 2021.
The holdup was power. Vattenfall's three new 145,000-volt lines to Tuna must cross Rörberg, the old Gävle-Sandviken airport, and its permit depended on the airport closing. Gävle's council voted in September 2024 to close it, but a local flying club appealed and sought a referendum, and Microsoft paused Tuna in April 2025. "Det är ingen idé att investera om man inte har ström" (there is no point investing without power), Microsoft energy chief Patrik Öhlund told the paper.
In March 2026 the Supreme Administrative Court declined to hear the club's appeal, making the closure final. A Vattenfall spokesman said the company was now a step closer to connecting its customer. Computer Sweden had reported that even with the airport closed, the new power line would not be finished before 2028 or 2029.
