Skåne's data center is Microsoft's in Staffanstorp, west of the town center, part of the Sweden Central cloud region with Microsoft's sites near Gävle and Sandviken that opened in late 2021. Microsoft still runs it, but on August 26, 2022 it dropped plans to expand it and said it would look for a larger site elsewhere in southern Sweden.
The fight was over diesel generators. Sydsvenskan reported that the building's original permit described it as a warehouse, not a data center, and that only once it was finished did Microsoft apply to the county board for an environmental permit for diesel backup generators, which the paper showed would release harmful air pollution. SVT reported that the county board had taken the view that the application should not be approved.
Microsoft then withdrew the application, which covered backup power for a facility with 70 megawatts of supplied power. It said it would keep running and expanding Staffanstorp using only the generators already there, by adjusting which services the site offers. Communications head Andreas Wingren told SVT local reaction had not affected the decision and that Skåne remained important to the company, but that it was too early to say which towns might host the new site.
