Data centers in Geneva: 1 project mapped
Geneva's newest data center sits in the basement of a housing district. On January 27, 2025 the Geneva cloud company Infomaniak, the utility SIG and the canton opened it in La Chapelle–Les Sciers in Plan-les-Ouates, beneath the park of the cooperative La Bistoquette. It opened at 25% of capacity and should reach about 10,000 servers by 2028. Equinix also runs data centers in Geneva, including GV2 in Le Lignon.
All the electricity the Plan-les-Ouates center uses is turned into heat at 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, boosted by heat pumps and fed into the neighborhood's heating network. SIG says it will heat 6,000 homes and avoid burning natural gas that would release about 3,600 tonnes of CO2 a year.
Geneva's Greens say that model is voluntary and demand is surging. In May 2026 cantonal deputy Philippe de Rougemont filed an urgent written question saying requests to connect new data centers to Geneva's grid "explosent" (are exploding), driven by banks and public bodies that want data stored locally. He asked the government how much power pending data centers have requested and whether it will legislate, warning that the Infomaniak design "n'est pas imposé par la loi" (is not required by law).
