Data centers in Thailand: 4 projects mapped

Thailand has put its data center boom on hold. On September 4, 2026, the government asked the operators of 49 data centers under construction to pause work voluntarily and froze approval decisions on more than 117 pending projects while officials write national rules on electricity, water, safety, siting and the environment, due in early October. The government cannot order the 49 to stop, but it can withhold permits from projects still waiting.

Most new building is in Chonburi, Rayong and Chachoengsao, east of Bangkok, where farms and factories already compete for water. In Chonburi's Khlong Tamru subdistrict, Bridge Data Centres, owned by Bain Capital, is building QHI01, a 200-megawatt campus with a 10-year deal for 3.3 million cubic meters of water a year; subcontractors at the site told Mongabay the real draw would be about a third higher. "There's been no survey asking the community about the data center or its water consumption," said subdistrict head Pudit Thamphayun.

In May 2026 the Board of Investment approved a 200-megawatt data center by DAMAC Group's Skyline in Chachoengsao, a 134-megawatt Bridge Data Centres project in Chonburi and TikTok's $25 billion expansion across Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao. In July, energy policymakers approved a separate, higher electricity rate for data centers so households do not pay for their grid upgrades. Chonburi MP Sahassawat Kumkong of the People's Party is pressing for a parliamentary committee to scrutinize the sector.
