In Columbiana, the seat of Shelby County, DigiPowerX runs a bitcoin-mining data center at the old Grede Foundry on Industrial Parkway, using a 22-megawatt substation left from the foundry that the company plans to upgrade to 70 megawatts, with 40 to 70 jobs. The site is less than 2,000 feet from Columbiana Middle School. Former mayor David Mitchell had signed a non-disclosure agreement with the company without telling the city council, confirming it only after a resident pressed him in August 2025; he lost re-election that month.
His successor, Mayor Lisa Davis, told a packed town hall in January 2026 that the site was already legally zoned and licensed and that nothing could be done to stop it. Council member Karen Lilly said her main worry was diesel exhaust from backup generators near children with asthma; the company said it had not yet decided how many generators it would need. DigiPowerX dropped an earlier plan that would have used hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a day after the city said it could not supply that much.

The county's largest proposal is on farmland near Wilsonville. NorthPoint Development took a two-year option in February 2025 on about 687 acres off County Highway 61 for a 14-building campus with a projected peak demand of 1,008 megawatts. More than 100 residents packed a Wilsonville council meeting in August 2025 to oppose it; County Manager Chad Scroggins said the land is zoned agricultural and any rezoning would be "very difficult" and publicly advertised.
Bham Now also listed a 54-megawatt DC Blox expansion among Shelby County's proposed projects in May 2026. A new state law, effective June 1, 2026, caps new data center tax abatements at 20 years unless a company signs a community investment agreement.
