Data centers in Colfax County, New Mexico: 1 project mapped

Colfax County's data center fight is in Raton, a city of about 6,000 near the Colorado line. In February 2026 the Raton City Commission voted 3-1 to sign a six-month study agreement with Atterix LLC, a Denver company incorporated only in December 2025. The plan had three phases: a 5-megawatt data center retrofitted into the closed Kmart on S. 2nd St., a 10-to-30-megawatt campus at the abandoned municipal power plant, and a further 20 megawatts near the municipal airport. "This is not a large-scale AI data center," Atterix's Matthew Bruff told commissioners, though a November email he sent city officials referred to "an Artificial Intelligence Data Node in Raton."

Opposition organized within weeks. Residents formed Protect Our Resources, which grew to more than 120 members, and a petition passed 400 signatures. "The Southwestern part of the U.S. is in the biggest megadrought that this area has seen in 1,200 years," co-founder Pat Walsh told commissioners. Commissioner Sally Hoger cast the lone no vote: "Once they get their foot in the door, we don't know what will happen." City Manager Neil Segotta took the other side, calling it a chance to boost a struggling economy.

In June the commission put off a vote on a moratorium after staff warned it might breach the Atterix agreement. The six-month study period expired in August without Atterix presenting its findings publicly, and Colfax County has since adopted a one-year moratorium on data centers in unincorporated areas. Raton's own moratorium vote, expected once the Atterix agreement lapsed, is what to watch next.
