Data centers in Dorchester County, South Carolina: 2 projects mapped
Google is building two data center campuses in Dorchester County: about 230 acres at 1055 Research Center Drive in Ridgeville, and a 206-acre site at the Winding Woods Commerce Park near St. George. Both are under construction, part of a $3.3 billion investment Google announced in 2024, with $2 billion earmarked for Dorchester County. Google confirmed in February 2024 that it was behind the sites, which it had assembled under the names Project Dawson and Project Evergreen. The company says the campuses will employ more than 200 people and has said parts of both would be running soon.
The county had already approved incentives the Post and Courier called among the biggest it has given a private employer: property taxes fixed at a 4 percent assessment ratio for at least 40 years, extendable to 53, a full refund of personal property taxes, a water agreement, and the sale of county land at Pine Hill for $5.84 million, about half its advertised price. State regulators also approved a discounted Dominion Energy rate for the site that the newspaper reported is less than half what residential customers pay. In October 2025 Google announced another $9 billion for South Carolina over 2026 and 2027, covering its Berkeley County campus and further work on the two Dorchester sites.

Residents have mostly asked for information. It took a resident's lawsuit in 2024 to make the county publish the water requirements for the St. George site, the South Carolina Daily Gazette reported. At a meeting in a packed gym at St. George Middle School on May 28, 2026, questions focused on water, power, traffic and flooding. "Because we already have a flooding issue. And then with them coming in, they're adding more to that flooding problem," said resident George Felder. Google's Lilyn Hester said the company pays its own energy costs and that its water comes from Lake Marion, not the aquifer: "your wells will not be impacted by our water use." Hester said Google receives incentives and that a tax revenue check will go to the county starting next year.
State Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort has introduced a bill that would have a state environmental office permit data centers, require annual water reporting and the most water-efficient cooling, and have the Public Service Commission make sure data centers cover the cost of their own power.
