TransGas Development Systems, a New York company, plans the Adams Fork Data Energy Center, a gas-powered data center campus on the former Twisted Gun Golf Course in Wharncliffe, Mingo County, West Virginia. It is one of two identical campuses TransGas wants in the county; the other sits at the Harless Industrial Park near the Mingo-Logan county line. TransGas has tried to build on this ground before: around 2010 it proposed a coal-to-gas plant there that was canceled in 2011, and in 2023 it announced what it called the world's largest ammonia plant on the site, permitted by the state in 2024; the data center is a third proposal for the same land.

The Division of Air Quality took public comment at hearings in August and September 2025 and approved air permits for both plants on October 2, 2025, despite dozens of residents speaking against them, saying the facilities "will meet all applicable state and federal air quality rules and regulations." Each power plant would run 117 gas engines and could generate more than 2,400 megawatts, the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy reported; the Ohio River Valley Institute reads the permits as allowing 2,457 megawatts per campus, together using more than 29.4 million megawatt hours a year, nearly as much as the 33 million megawatt hours the entire state consumes. The gas plants would be off grid, built for the two campuses alone and supplying no one else in West Virginia; TransGas has said it wants to eventually expand its data center capacity to 9.8 gigawatts.

Ten Mingo County residents sued in federal court in early December 2025, arguing the project needed federal environmental review, because of its effects on streams, mine-drainage channels and habitat used by federally protected species, before construction could continue. On December 23, 2025 U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers turned down their request for a temporary halt, ruling they had not yet notified the defendants and had not shown they were likely to win on the merits; their request for a permanent injunction was not addressed, so the state's air permits stand while the case continues.
