Ascenty Queretaro 2 data center, Querétaro, Mexico

Ascenty's Queretaro 2 data center stands at kilometer 17.5 of State Highway 100 in the municipality of Colon, in the Mexican state of Queretaro, and opened on July 1, 2022 together with its Queretaro 1 building, the company's first two data centers in Mexico. Queretaro 2 covers 24,000 square meters with 31 megawatts of power, and Ascenty, a joint venture of Digital Realty and Brookfield, opened it with 20 percent of its space already taken by clients. Founder Chris Torto said Queretaro is attractive for its location near the industrial Bajio region and Mexico City, its low risk of earthquakes or hurricanes, and its reliable power supply.

Governor Mauricio Kuri has led the drive to bring data centers to Colon, which has drawn $10 billion in investment from Microsoft, Google and Amazon while the area has lived through more than two years of drought. Guadalupe Hernandez, 68, who sells blackberries to tourists, gets water only every 15 days: "I have lost 60% of my crop. With no crop, there's no money."

On August 31, 2026 Oxfam Mexico and Oxfam Intermon published a report saying data centers in Colon and El Marquez are stripping residents of public goods, and that the state government has exempted the companies from filing environmental impact statements. Water concessions come from the National Water Commission, CONAGUA, which told reporters it had granted no new concessions in Queretaro and that Microsoft had bought its concession from another owner.
