Data centers in Austria: 2 projects mapped
Google bought land for a data center in Kronstorf, Upper Austria, in 2008 and broke ground there on April 23, 2026. The company's first self-built Austrian data center will cover 42,000 square metres, 29,000 of them data center space, on a 70-hectare site near the Enns river, with off-site heat recovery, a green roof with solar panels and about 100 direct jobs, DCD and PPC Land reported. Google has not given an investment figure. Upper Austria's governor, Thomas Stelzer, called it "a powerful signal for Upper Austria as a hub for business and innovation." Google also pledged a fund with the Upper Austrian Fisheries Association to improve the Enns's ecosystem as part of a promise to replenish more freshwater than the site consumes by 2030.
Most of the rest of Austria's capacity is around Vienna. The city has about 82 megawatts of operating capacity, more than 80% of the national total of about 100 megawatts, with about 170 megawatts more in the development pipeline, according to a Colliers report summarised in German by Immobilien-Redaktion, which named power and grid connection times as the main limits. Microsoft says its Austrian cloud region, launched in 2025, is being built at Schwechat, Achau and Vösendorf, south-east of Vienna, but has not said how far construction has progressed or how much power it uses, the public broadcaster ORF reported in German.

The grid operator is being asked for far more. Gerhard Christiner of Austrian Power Grid told ORF, in German, that requests for about 2,500 megawatts of data center capacity had reached his company, with similar volumes at the distribution operators, though not all would be built. The US company CloudHQ plans a campus of up to about 200 megawatts at Leopoldsdorf, just south of Vienna, with construction from 2027, and the Greens in neighbouring Maria Lanzendorf have criticised the lack of studies on noise and heat, ORF reported. ORF also reported, in German, that resistance at Kronstorf had been greater than at Leopoldsdorf.
Regulators are adding conditions. Since July 2026, Vienna has required data centers with more than 1 megawatt of energy input to carry out a cost-benefit analysis of waste heat use before being built or significantly modernised, under the city's 2026 energy law amendments, according to a German-language legal summary by E+H Rechtsanwälte. Lower Austria introduced its own siting rules for data centers in June, ORF reported.
