Digital Realty, which bought Interxion, runs two data centers in Vienna, VIE1 and VIE2, including the one in Floridsdorf that Wien Energie calls the largest in Austria. In 2020 Interxion bought a 22,000-square-meter plot next to the campus for a new center of up to 40 megawatts of computing power, and Microsoft announced an Azure cloud region for Austria at the Federal Chancellery. Any new or substantially modernized data center in the city now faces heat-reuse rules that took effect in July 2026.
Under Vienna's Energy Law Amendment Act 2026, a data center drawing more than 1 megawatt must weigh, before it is built, modernized or switched on, whether its waste heat can go into the district heating network, working with the heating operator. Building one also generally needs a permit, unless its heat is used, according to the law firm E+H. The law has no transition period.
In Floridsdorf, Wien Energie spent about €3.5 million on three 1-megawatt heat pumps that take heat from the data center's roughly 26°C cooling water and pipe it underground to Klinik Floridsdorf, an 800-bed hospital next door, covering 50 to 70 percent of its heating. In its bid for one of the EU's AI "gigafactories," worth up to €5 billion, Vienna proposed a center whose server heat would feed the city network; Stefan Gara, a Neos member of the Vienna state parliament, estimates that could heat about 200,000 households.
