The Valparaíso Region's main data center is Scala Data Centers' campus at Curauma, about 56 miles from Santiago, and Scala is expanding it. Its first building, SSCLCR01, opened in August 2023: a $65 million, 5-megawatt data center built in 10 months and fully leased to one large unnamed cloud customer. Scala says the campus could grow to about 30 megawatts, and the property firm Colliers listed the Curauma expansion among projects under construction in Chile in 2026.
Scala says the building is air-cooled and uses no water, a point that matters in a country where data center water use is contested. The company picked Curauma partly for Google's Humboldt undersea cable, which the regional coastal-use commission has approved to land at Santo Domingo, in the region, and link it to Sydney, Australia. The cable is due to be laid in the last quarter of 2026 and to start carrying traffic from 2028. Most of Chile's data centers, and its data center disputes, are in the Santiago region.
