Data centers in Chile: 13 projects mapped
Google wants to build a $200 million data center on about 23 hectares on Camino a Lonquén in Cerrillos, a district of Santiago, on the same land where Chile's environmental court stopped its first design in 2024. On June 17, 2026, Google's Chilean subsidiary, Dataluna, asked the Environmental Evaluation Service (SEA) to rule that the redesigned, air-cooled project does not need a full environmental review. Google says it has not yet decided whether to build, and the SEA's answer is still pending.
The neighborhood group MOSACAT and the Latin American Observatory of Environmental Conflicts (OLCA) have asked the SEA to require a full review with public participation, arguing it is essentially the project approved in 2020. That design would have drawn up to 169 liters of water a second from the Santiago Central aquifer. On February 26, 2024, the Second Environmental Court partly annulled the approval, finding too little evidence to rule out serious harm to the aquifer, and Google later gave up the permit.

The new design swaps water cooling for 63 air-cooled condensers and adds 44 backup diesel generators, with 695.9 tonnes of diesel stored on site, below the 1,000-tonne level that has triggered a formal review since January 2026. Building would take 30 months in four phases. MOSACAT's Tania Rodríguez told Down To Earth the group persuaded Google to drop water cooling, but that the change went through without a new environmental assessment.
