The biggest data center announced in Hunan is the Hunan Artificial Intelligence Computing Data Center in Changsha's Tianxin Economic Development Zone, where earthmoving began in July 2025. Hefei City Cloud Data Center Co. is investing 5.05 billion yuan in the project, planned for 3,000 server racks on about 2.9 hectares. No opening date or power figure has been published.
Changsha already runs two public computing centers. The National Supercomputing Center in Changsha, a round white building on the Hunan University campus on Lushan South Road, runs a new-generation Tianhe supercomputer for more than 1,200 users. Sugon's Changsha 5A AI computing center opened on November 4, 2022, 148 days after work began; it cools its chips by submerging them in a special liquid. In February 2026 the chip maker MetaX opened a Changsha center as its hub for central China.
Power has been tight before. During China's coal shortage in September 2021, Hunan switched off building facade lights and billboards at peak hours, and the provincial branch of State Grid warned that coal stocks covered only nine days of generation; coal plants supply nearly half of Hunan's electricity, Caixin reported.
