Tencent runs Tianjin's one tracked data center, in the Binhai New Area High-Tech Zone. The company signed a framework agreement with the Tianjin Economic & Technical Development Area in 2011 to expand its data and research operations there after finishing an earlier storage project, and said at the time it aimed eventually for 200,000 servers in Tianjin.
In February 2024, Data Center Frontier reported that Tencent had commissioned a 10.54-megawatt microgrid of rooftop solar and battery storage at the site, expected to produce 12 million kilowatt-hours a year, about what 6,000 households use. Tencent said renewable energy supplies 54% of its data centers' electricity company-wide.
Tianjin sits inside the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei hub, one of eight regions China named in 2022 for its national data center buildout. No public dispute over the Tianjin site is on the record so far.
