NTT Global Data Centers plans one of Europe's largest data centers in Nierstein, a wine town in Rheinhessen south of Frankfurt: a campus of nine buildings using about 482 megawatts of power on the Rhein-Selz-Park, the former US Army Anderson Barracks at Dexheim. Nierstein's council approved the development plan unanimously on December 10, 2025, and it took effect on January 28, 2026. In February NTT said it would file its building application in the spring and expected a permit about a year later, with construction from 2027 and the first building running in 2029.
Almost nobody has objected. Nierstein's council and the Schwabsburg village council voted unanimously to put the plans on public display, and Mayor Jochen Schmitt said there had been broad support and no opposition, only interested questions. "That doesn't happen at every site," NTT spokesman Günter Eggers said. NTT says the campus will employ about 400 people and run for at least 50 years.
NTT says the power will come entirely from renewable sources, bought mostly through contracts with German suppliers, plus solar panels and a wind farm planned on the site. Cooling is to run in a closed loop, and the town and the Rhein-Selz community want to use the waste heat. The whole campus is due to be finished around 2037.
