Data centers in Greece: 2 projects mapped

Greece's data center fight is in Spata, east of Athens near the airport, where three data centers are advancing: Microsoft's; Data In Scale, a joint venture of the UAE's Damac and the utility PPC; and the 80-megawatt Olive Data Center by Dromeus Capital and APTO. Spata-Artemida's municipal council opposed the Olive project, but the Attica regional council approved its environmental study. Residents have appealed to the Council of State, Greece's highest administrative court, asking for a study of the three projects' combined effects and of how much the area can take.

Residents worry about continuous noise, a warmer local climate and heavy water and power use near homes. Data In Scale's first phase is 12.5 megawatts for 150 million euros. Nearby at Paiania, Data4 is building a 90-megawatt, 300 million euro campus whose first building is due in early 2027; Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis laid its first stone. Digital Realty already runs three data centers in Attica and one on Crete.

Greece has only a few dozen megawatts of data centers today, but the plans on the table would take it past 1 gigawatt before 2030, To Vima reported. PPC is also designing a 300-megawatt data center in Western Macedonia that could grow to 1,000 megawatts, running on local clean power rather than the national grid.
