County Louth's data center fight is in Drogheda, where Premier Periclase wants to replace its old magnesia works on Boyne Avenue and Strand Road, beside the River Boyne, with a three-story, 26,550-square-meter data center and a gas-fired energy center. Louth County Council granted conditional permission, and An Taisce, Ireland's national trust, appealed to An Coimisiún Pleanála on July 24, 2025. Councillors said in February 2026 that a ruling was expected within weeks; none has been published.
Most of the power would come from nine gas engines fed from Gas Networks Ireland's Drogheda transmission station next door, with rooftop solar panels and batteries, and the company has not said what the data center will be used for. An Taisce says the plan "would facilitate a breach of the emissions reduction obligations under the Climate Act," and its appeal also raises water abstraction and the local water supply.

Local councillors want it built. At the February meeting of Drogheda Borough District, Labour's Pio Smith called it a possible "catalyst" for the town's underused industrial land and complained that the appeal came "15 minutes before closing." Independent Kevin Callan said the site would otherwise stay an "environmental dump." On the other side, People Before Profit member James Renaghan runs a petition backing An Taisce, which had 750 signatures, and the party held a public meeting on June 24.
Drogheda's existing data centers are Amazon's, in the IDA Business and Technology Park on the Donore Road, which lies across the county line in Meath.
