Ireland's planning appeals body, An Coimisiún Pleanála, overturned permission in September 2026 for a 30,000-square-meter data center in Killala, County Mayo, proposed by Mayo Data Hub Ltd, part of the US firm Avaio Digital. It found the developer had not shown enough local electricity or any deal to buy renewable power, and ruled that it "has failed to demonstrate that the proposed development would be in accordance with the overarching objectives of the Climate Action Plan 2025." Mayo County Council had approved the 1.5 billion euro project despite objections including one from the novelist Sally Rooney.
Most of Ireland's data centers are around Dublin, where new grid connections were effectively frozen for years. The energy regulator, the CRU, ended that freeze in December 2025 with rules requiring each new data center to bring its own generation or storage and to get at least 80 percent of its yearly power from new Irish renewable projects, with six years to get there.
On April 27, 2026, Friends of the Irish Environment, Friends of the Earth Ireland and ClientEarth took the CRU to the High Court, arguing the rules let data centers run on fossil gas for six years and leave backup generation out of the 80 percent test. Outside Dublin, Amazon plans data centers at Bord na Móna's Eco Energy Park in County Offaly and Microsoft at Naas.
Withdrawn by the developer Apple dropped the project after years of legal challenges brought by local residents.
