Meta data centers: 35 sites mapped

Meta's biggest fight is over the power plants for its Richland Parish campus in northern Louisiana. In April 2026 Entergy Louisiana asked state regulators to approve seven more gas-fired power plants for the campus, on top of three already approved, for ten plants of 754 megawatts of power each, serving this one customer. The Union of Concerned Scientists said that is enough power to meet New Orleans' peak demand six times over. The Public Service Commission's final decision on the seven plants is scheduled for December 16, 2026.

Entergy broke ground on the first two plants, the roughly 1.5-gigawatt Franklin Farms Power Station, for a campus first announced at about $10 billion. Meta offered to pay those plants' full annual revenue for 15 years, but environmental groups say Entergy did not choose the most cost-effective option for ratepayers. Regulators killed a subpoena on August 12, 2026, already upheld by a judge, that would have made Meta document its investment, jobs and power demand; in December 2025 they had adopted a rule fast-tracking approval of power plants built mainly for data centers, requiring those customers to pay half the cost.

At Meta's campus in Huntsville, Alabama, construction is under way on two more buildings that will expand it to about 2.5 million square feet; a meeting with city leaders in August 2026 drew questions about its water and power use, noise and jobs, and a residents' group there wants a moratorium on new data centers. In Temple, Texas, residents urged the Bell County Commissioners Court in July 2026 to stop giving data centers tax abatements, pointing to the ones Meta already holds from both the city and the county.
