Data centers in Denmark: 11 projects mapped

Denmark's power grid is full, and data centers are being pushed to the back of the line. On March 2, 2026, the state grid operator Energinet stopped signing new large connections after requests reached 60 gigawatts, against national peak demand of just over 7 gigawatts. Emergency legislation introduced on August 20 would give households, small businesses and green-energy projects first call on the grid and put data centers last. Parliament is reviewing it, and the rules are meant to apply when grid requests are next assessed this autumn.

The biggest new plan is Data Center Kassø, on 105 hectares of farmland at Kassøvej 26, about 15 kilometers west of Aabenraa and 2 kilometers from the village of Hjordkær. The applicant, Dapsi International ApS, plans four large buildings over about six years, with up to 185 backup diesel generators and about 400 staff. Aabenraa municipality set the scope of its environmental review on April 27, 2026; an environmental report, a draft permit and a public hearing come next.

Google bought land beside the Kassø substation, where the Danish and German grids meet, in 2017. Denmark's operating data centers include Google's in Fredericia, Meta's in Odense, Apple's in Viborg and Microsoft's around Køge. Climate and Energy Minister Samira Nawa has blamed "foreign datacentres," especially those of "American tech giants," for the strain on the grid.
