Meta Gallatin data center, Gallatin, Tennessee

Meta's Gallatin data center sits in the Gallatin Industrial Center, four miles northeast of downtown Gallatin in Sumner County, Tennessee. The 900 acre campus has four buildings spanning nearly 1.7 million square feet and has been operating for about two years. Meta puts its investment in the campus at $1.5 billion.

Utility records show the campus used more than 53 million gallons of water in 2025, about 2% of the city's total, ranking Meta among Gallatin's top five water users. "It's one entity and they can do more per the contract with the city, and they're still building," City Councilman Pascal Jouvence said. Meta says its closed loop cooling system uses 80% less water than a typical data center.

The city granted Meta a 20 year payment in lieu of taxes package worth an estimated $19.5 million in tax breaks, and Meta paid an estimated $1.8 million in local taxes in 2025. "I probably wouldn't agree to a PILOT," Mayor Paige Brown said. Neighbors on Brights Lane describe brown dust during construction and a low hum at night; one, Elizabeth Holmes, said Meta sent her a $2,500 check after a blast shook her house, in exchange for a statement that she would not sue.

In June 2026, Councilman Jouvence proposed a two year moratorium on new data center construction, and the council deferred the vote. In July the council annexed about 125 acres west of Brights Lane, just north of the campus, with no stated purpose, though Jouvence said the land "looks perfect to extend for a new Data Center." No expansion has been announced.

The council approved a 60 day pause on new data center applications on July 28, and on August 25 the Gallatin Planning Commission recommended a 12 month moratorium. Mayor Brown has called moratorium talk "performative," saying no data center proposals are pending. The City Council has not yet voted on the Planning Commission's recommendation.
