Data centers in Tennessee: 14 projects mapped

Tennessee's biggest data centers are Elon Musk's Colossus and Colossus II in Memphis, now owned by SpaceX, which has bought more than 1,100 acres across the Memphis area and is building a gas power plant across the state line in Southaven, Mississippi. Across the rest of the state, towns and counties are pausing new data centers: more than 20 have moratoriums in force, and Nashville's runs until December 1.

Colossus II sits beside homes in Whitehaven. "You just have to endure this," said Loretta Thornton, who lives next door. "Who will want to buy it, living beside this thing?" Memphis Mayor Paul Young says the company paid $25 million in taxes in its first year, second only to FedEx in Shelby County, but acknowledged it has not delivered everything it promised, including a delayed water recycling plant meant to cut its use of city water for cooling. Southaven residents have filed a class action over noise from the power plant.
