Meta proposed a data center complex east of Gibbons in Sturgeon County, Alberta, Canada. The project was announced in July 2026 with an estimated cost of $13 billion. A separate natural gas-fired power plant was planned to help serve it. The Globe and Mail reported a planned capacity of one gigawatt.
Hundreds of residents protested outside county offices in Morinville over the proposal. Some residents said they were concerned about electricity and water costs. Sturgeon County had made data centers a permitted land use in 2025, and the mayor said the county had not required public open houses for this kind of project.
