Data centers in the Netherlands: 16 projects mapped
The Netherlands still bars the biggest data centers, those covering at least 10 hectares and drawing 70 megawatts of power or more, from everywhere except two zones: Hollands Kroon in North Holland, where Google and Microsoft run data centers at Middenmeer, and Het Hogeland in Groningen, home to Eemshaven. The ban began as a temporary halt on February 16, 2022, the same year Meta dropped its planned campus at Zeewolde after local opposition. Today the tighter limit is the power grid, which is full around Amsterdam and Schiphol.
On April 29, 2026, a court in Arnhem ruled that grid operator TenneT could keep work paused on a 70-megawatt connection for Goodman's planned data center at Vijfhuizen in Haarlemmermeer, finding the regional grid "genuinely at full capacity." TenneT has told companies near Schiphol the shortage could last until around 2035. Amsterdam stopped new large data centers in June 2025, but earlier approvals still stand: in July 2026 the city issued Equinix a building permit on the Amstel III business park in Zuidoost.

Equinix will build one of the four planned towers at Amstel III for now. At full size the site would need 80 megawatts and use about 779 million kilowatt-hours a year; all Amsterdam households used 869 million in 2024. A city spokesperson said the municipality faces large damage claims if it pulls out.
In Lelystad, Equinix plans a 150-megawatt data center at the Flevokust Haven business park under zoning approved in 2021. Council members were told it would use as much power as 3,000 to 5,000 households; experts consulted by NU.nl put it closer to 200,000. Its three buildings cover at most 7.5 hectares, so the national ban does not apply. North Holland, which had 67 data centers in 2025 and about 20 more seeking permits, is rewriting its plan to allow new ones only inside existing clusters.
