Liguria's place in the data center map comes from Genoa's role as a landing point for undersea cables. In February 2021 Equinix and Vodafone announced the GN1 data center in Genoa to land the 2Africa cable, which reached GN1 in April 2022, Submarine Networks reported. GN1 is linked directly to Equinix's Milan facilities. In February 2026 the Unitirreno cable was completed: more than 1,000 kilometres from Mazara del Vallo in Sicily via Rome-Fiumicino and Olbia to Genoa, with 24 fibre pairs and 624 Tbps of total capacity, Il Sole 24 Ore and La Voce di Genova reported. It cost €80 million, and it comes ashore through a one-kilometre bore pipe under the seabed and reaches the Lagaccio Digital Hub through an existing urban tunnel, where the landing station is integrated with a neutral data center. "There is the need to balance the weight of Marseille, which has a very high concentration of cables," said Renato Brunetti, chief executive of Unitirreno and Unidata. "If an accident happens in Marseille, the internet stops in the whole of Europe, if not the whole world." Regional president Marco Bucci said Liguria "can truly become Italy's data port".
The region's own data center belongs to Liguria Digitale, which runs the servers for Liguria's public administration. After two years and €3 million of renovation it reopened with 2,000 square metres and more than 4,000 virtual and physical servers, DCD reported. Not everyone is comfortable with the direction. In a September 2026 dossier for the Ligurian outlet Trucioli, a local critic argued that GN1 and facilities like it are a new and heavy item in the regional energy budget that the region's PEAR 2030 energy plan does not address. The critic noted that Bucci, as mayor of Genoa, had backed the GN1 project.
