Kuala Lumpur has one data center mapped: Huawei Cloud's Malaysian region, which Huawei says is located in the city and keeps customer data in the country. The large campuses are being built around the city: of Malaysia's 123 data centers operating, under construction or planned, 50 are in Selangor and 43 in Johor, Bernama reported in December 2025.
For city households, the question is who pays for the power and water those campuses need. On December 8, 2025, Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir told the Senate that data center operators must bear the full cost of grid upgrades under a "user pays" approach, and that domestic water tariffs would not rise because of them. Data centers were drawing 485 megawatts of power in March 2025, nearly five times the year before, Bernama reported.
