Data centers in Zurich: 4 projects mapped

The largest data center being built in the canton of Zurich is Vantage Data Centers' campus in Volketswil, which will draw up to 100 megawatts of power, about a fifth of what the whole city of Zurich needs, the utility EKZ told the NZZ. In Glattbrugg, Digital Realty is building ZUR4, its fourth data center on the site, due around mid-2028; the campus will then exceed 60 megawatts and at full load use about 500 gigawatt-hours a year, CH Media reported.

Vantage also runs a campus in Winterthur that will total 40 megawatts across three buildings, and invested 370 million francs in a 24-megawatt campus in Glattfelden. The jobs are mostly in construction: up to 400 people worked on the Glattfelden build, but about 25 run it. EKZ has had more than 100 requests to connect new data centers in five years, and six of the nine substations it is building from 2014 to 2030 are mainly for data centers.

Zurich's politics focus on heat. New heating networks fed by data centers in Dielsdorf and Volketswil are due to be ready in the fall of 2026, and in Volketswil and neighboring towns they should heat about 7,000 homes, the cantonal government said. Energie Uster plans to connect parts of Uster to the Volketswil network.
