Google's data center near Bridgeport is operating on the former Widows Creek coal plant site, and the company is investing another $1.5 billion in the campus through 2027. The two-building site opened in 2019 and leases land from the Tennessee Valley Authority. The current work expands that operating campus.
The site remains a major source of local tax revenue despite a 30-year state tax abatement. Jackson County Development Authority president Nathan Lee said Google contributed about $1.9 million to the county's tax base in 2025, much of it through the educational payment required by the abatement. Lee also said construction demand reopened Bridgeport's Tennessee River port to bring in sand after a decade without use, and filled local campgrounds and rental properties with workers.
Google says it will pay for the power and infrastructure needed for the expansion. It also pledged a $2 million fund with TVA and the Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama for energy-efficiency work, primarily in Jackson County, plus $550,000 for school science kits. The $1.5 billion expansion is planned across 2026 and 2027.
