Data centers in Miami-Dade County, Florida: 3 projects mapped
Iron Mountain's MIA-1, a 150,000-square-foot data center using 16 megawatts of power, is nearing completion on a 3.4-acre former storage site in Westview, a mostly Black unincorporated neighborhood in northwest Miami-Dade. It has been under construction since February 2025. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's office said in September 2026 that she "looks forward to receiving an ordinance that puts in place a moratorium consistent with state law." Such an ordinance would need a vote of the County Commission.
Many Westview residents learned what it was only after work began. County official Eric Silva said the use was "permitted by right" under industrial zoning; because the county code calls the building a "telecommunications hub," Iron Mountain needed only a height and parking change, so notices went just to properties within 500 feet. "For a data center, only a 500-foot radius?" said homeowners' association president Vanessa Woodward Byers. An aide to Commissioner Marleine Bastien said confidentiality agreements meant "the full scope of the project was not even available for the board to review."

Amy Dawkins, who lives less than half a mile away, wants a written community benefits agreement; the Miami-Dade Beacon Council has said it will bring 30 jobs averaging more than $71,000 a year. The Miami-Dade NAACP has joined the national "Stop Dirty Data" campaign. Iron Mountain says MIA-1 will run on 100% carbon-free energy, but WLRN reported the specific sources "remain unclear."
A second new data center, from the company Metrobloks, is planned in Tamiami in the county's west and had not broken ground when The Miami Times reported on it this year. Miami-Dade's older data centers are downtown internet hubs: Equinix's MI1, the NAP of the Americas at 50 NE 9th Street, where 18 undersea internet cables come in, and Digital Realty's seven-story MIA10 at 36 NE 2nd Street. Both are built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane.
