Honolulu County's data centers are small colocation facilities, buildings that rent server space to local businesses, built for companies that want their data kept on the island; there is no huge "hyperscale" campus on Oahu and no fight over one. Servpac's MTP Data Center in Mililani Technology Park, Hawaii's only Tier IV certified facility, broke ground on a second building on January 22, 2026: more than 15,500 square feet on five acres, costing $13 million, doubling the center's capacity and creating at least 15 permanent jobs, with completion planned for mid-2026, a date that has now passed with no opening announced. DRFortress also runs a colocation facility in Honolulu, expanded in 2023.

Servpac's founder, Richard Zheng, pitched the expansion on Hawaii's exposure to hurricanes, tsunamis and sea level rise, calling it the state's most geographically secure data center.

The debate over large AI data centers in Hawaii is happening on Hawaii island, not Oahu. Hawaii County's Windward Planning Commission deferred until October a bill that would separate AI data centers from ordinary data processing in the zoning code. "That's the urgency. I want to get ahead of it," said Council member Heather Kimball, the bill's sponsor. The Windward and Leeward planning commissions have until November 4, 2026 to send the county council a recommendation, or it counts as negative.
