Data centers in Madison County, Iowa: 1 project mapped

Madison County sits at the southern edge of the West Des Moines data center cluster, where Microsoft has been building for 15 years. Part of its Project Osmium campus, a $1.5 billion to $2 billion development, sits here: 40 of its roughly 200 acres are in Madison County, south of Dale Maffitt Reservoir, with the rest in Warren County. West Des Moines paid for roads and utilities through a tax increment district, including an extension of Veterans Parkway that officials said would open 5,000 acres of northern Warren and Madison counties to development.

Microsoft's next site, called Ruthenium, would sit fully in Madison County: its sixth West Des Moines-area data center, planned on about 132 acres of newly annexed land bounded by Southwest 60th Street, 110th Street, Woodland Avenue and Veterans Parkway. Carol Reichardt, whose family's 150-acre farm adjoins the site to the south, told the council her family was not opposed but wanted a say: "This place is very important to us." Microsoft pumped about 11.5 million gallons of water into its Iowa data centers in July 2022 alone, about 6% of what West Des Moines Water Works supplied that month.

Madison County has passed a moratorium on data center projects, one of more than a dozen Iowa counties to do so; it runs through May 26, 2027. Neighboring Adair County has drafted its own data center ordinance and shared it with Madison and Union counties.
