Microsoft Project Osmium data center, Cumming, Iowa

Microsoft's Project Osmium data center at 5855 SW Kerry St in Cumming is operating, one of five Microsoft campuses around West Des Moines, Iowa. The address sits in Madison County, though the 2016 announcement covered 200 acres split between Warren and Madison counties for four construction phases. Microsoft has since built two more campuses nearby, and on November 20, 2023 the West Des Moines city council approved the first zoning step for a sixth, Ruthenium, just northwest of Osmium in Madison County.

David Roach, 62, lives on his family's 40-acre farm two miles from the campus and says the light spilling from it at night is "polluting my dark." Microsoft's five West Des Moines-area data centers used nearly 70 million gallons of water in 2024, more than any other customer of the city's water utility, and Madison County put a moratorium on new data center permits from May 26, 2026 to May 26, 2027.

Microsoft has invested an estimated $5 billion to $6 billion in its West Des Moines-area campuses since 2012, and the company has paid about $25 million toward water system upgrades while the city has spent more than $200 million on related infrastructure. Public radio counted more than 600 Microsoft employees across the five sites; Ryan Moffatt, the city's economic development director, said construction on Ruthenium is set to start in 2026.
