DartPoints, a Dallas data center company, bought the former Lexmark data center off New Circle Road in Lexington in spring 2026 and plans to expand it, but the city's moratorium on data center permits is keeping the site from opening. The Urban County Council holds a public hearing on new data center rules on October 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Government Center, 200 East Main Street, before any final vote. The moratorium runs until at least October 31.

The sale did not need council approval. "We found out when the public found out," said Council member Liz Sheehan. On June 9 the council voted unanimously, without discussion, to stop accepting data center zone changes, plans and permits. "We need to think very carefully about data centers," Mayor Linda Gorton said. "They do not produce many jobs."

After a July 30 hearing that ran nearly six hours, the Planning Commission recommended tight limits: no data center over 40,000 square feet or 25 megawatts of power, a 30-decibel noise cap around the clock, and a distance of 1,500 feet from homes, schools, daycares and health care sites. "We are being rushed to make a recommendation within a 60-day period," Commissioner Frank Nickel said.

Many residents want an outright ban. Rolanda Woolfork of the Georgetown Street Neighborhood Association said neighbors near the site had not seen anyone from DartPoints: "why now? What's the rush? And why in our backyard?"
