Wiscasset voters will decide on November 3, 2026, whether to adopt a 180-day moratorium on data center applications, which the Select Board put on the special town meeting ballot 5-0 on September 1. It would cover buildings of 10,000 square feet or more or 20 megawatts of power or more, and could be extended. The one data center idea in the county, a plan described as $5 billion for 300 acres of town land on Old Ferry Road, is dead: the developer said in August, "We are not pursuing the project anymore."
The site sits beside power lines left from the Maine Yankee nuclear plant. The town signed a secrecy agreement with the developer in August 2025, and when it expired in August 2026 the town named it: Boundless Power, LLC of Manhattan Beach, California. Released emails show the town's economic development director warned that the plan's power use would be about 60% of Maine's yearly electricity. "Once (it's) here, it's a vampire. You're never getting rid of it," Sam Godin of nearby Westport Island told the board in 2025.
The plan also cost the town money. Lincoln County had awarded Wiscasset $240,000 in November 2024 to study housing on the same land; after the town proposed using it to explore a data center, the county took the money back and in March 2026 gave it to Waldoboro and Newcastle. Town Manager Dennis Simmons said he does not regret signing the agreement but regrets "that it created concern and contributed to a loss of trust among some residents."
