Data centers in Calvert County, Maryland: 1 project mapped

Calvert County has had a six-month moratorium on data center site plans since August 28, 2026, and Amazon has dropped its plan to build next to the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant in Lusby. The commissioners passed the moratorium on August 18, two weeks after the county announced that Amazon Web Services had withdrawn its application. While the pause runs, into early 2027, the county will not accept or approve data center site plans and will consider new zoning rules.

Amazon had filed plans in May for eight data center buildings, about 2.46 million square feet in all, on mostly forested land owned by Constellation Energy at 1650 Calvert Cliffs Parkway. Voters had already turned on the project: on June 23 all three commissioners who had voted against a pause, Todd Ireland, Mark C. Cox Sr. and Earl F. "Buddy" Hance, lost their Republican primaries. Amazon called its exit a business decision. Melissa Emmal, whose petition for a moratorium passed 10,000 signatures, called it "a welcome development" but noted the company could resubmit.

A second idea came in March, when Natelli Holdings, a Gaithersburg real estate firm, proposed buying a county-owned former Dominion Energy site near Calvert Cliffs State Park for four data center buildings drawing about 300 megawatts of power. The county's data center page now says the government "is not currently pursuing or exploring data center development." Voters pick commissioners in the November 3, 2026 general election.
