No data center company has a confirmed proposal in Chisago County, but the county board has paused new applications anyway. In early August 2026, after a public hearing, it voted a one-year moratorium on what it calls "high utility use" developments, including data centers, while its planning commission writes rules defining and controlling them; the pause can end early once that ordinance is ready. It applies only where the county controls zoning, not inside cities.

The pressure has come from residents. In Chisago City, residents twice used the council's open-mic time in early 2026 to ask for a moratorium; city leaders said one company had explored a data center there but dropped it after Xcel Energy said the local grid was inadequate, and Mayor Jeremy Dresel said the city has no current proposals or grid expansion plans for one. The city said it signs no nondisclosure agreements with prospective businesses.

Wright County, where residents opposed two data center proposals near Monticello, became the first Minnesota county to adopt an emergency moratorium, in May 2026.
