Starkville's Planning and Zoning Commission voted on August 11, 2026 against a bitcoin mining facility at 407 Industrial Park Road, after more than 80 residents packed City Hall to oppose it. The Board of Aldermen was scheduled to take up the decision on August 18; no result has been published. If the board denies it, the developer can appeal in court or reapply next year, and its representative, Mandy Jiang of Starkville Energy LLC, said: "We're probably going to appeal."

The site is zoned industrial, but crypto mining is not a listed use in the city's development code, so the project needed a special exemption. City planners recommended denial because the application left out water and wastewater needs, employment, flood planning and environmental review. "I've never had an applicant that had such a contentious issue be so unprepared," Commissioner Jeremiah Dumas said. Residents, a Mississippi State professor who owns neighboring land and the next-door Oktibbeha County Humane Society raised noise concerns.

The mine would draw up to 30 megawatts of power, making it Starkville Utilities' second-largest electric customer after Mississippi State University; the developer would pay about $800,000 for transmission lines. Water estimates rose from 20,000 gallons a day in June to about 73,000 at peak, Jiang said in August. Mayor Lynn Spruill backed the project, saying its revenue could spare ratepayers an electric rate increase.
