Reno, Washoe County's largest city, has stopped accepting, processing or approving new data center applications until August 31, 2027, or until it adopts data center rules, whichever comes first. The City Council voted 6-1 on June 1, 2026 to extend a 30-day pause it first passed in May; Councilmember Kathleen Taylor voted no both times. Projects already approved or under construction are not affected, including the Webb and Oppidan data centers in the North Valleys.

Both were approved in early 2025. The Webb Data Center is set to use 28.5 megawatts of power; Oppidan, next to it at North Virginia Street and Stead Boulevard, is set to use 8 megawatts and was approved on appeal after the Planning Commission denied it over water and power. The commission then asked the council to pause approvals, and a proposal for minimum data center standards failed. At the nine-hour June meeting, most public comments called for the pause or a full ban, while construction union members opposed it.

Councilmember Devon Reese, who asked for the pause while running for mayor, said, "No moratorium can be lifted in the absence of regulations." Councilmember Meghan Ebert pushed to tie its end to new rules: "I need to show my community that they will be protected, and that this isn't a political stunt." The council also voted unanimously to start writing data center permit rules.

Wider rules for Reno, Sparks and Washoe County are being studied by the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency, which cannot adopt them itself; local and state governments decide. Its public survey drew more than 9,000 responses by mid-August, 96 percent against data centers. Director Jeremy Smith hopes to present a final report at the regional planning board's October 8 meeting and said he would "make sure that the concept of a ban is loud and clear."
