Centra data center, Reno, Nevada

Centra's RNO2 data center at 265 Keystone Avenue near downtown Reno is still under construction, and the company now lists its first 4.4 MW of capacity for the fourth quarter of 2026, later than the early second-quarter opening it announced at groundbreaking. Centra broke ground on the 90,000 square foot Keystone data center in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada, in November 2025, and says the 12MW figure attached to the site represents its full potential.

Centra, formerly known as Deep Edge and backed by Columbia Capital, already manages the meet-me room and carrier hotel at 200 South Virginia Street in Reno. It pitches RNO2 as Reno's first purpose-built interconnection data center, with two meet-me rooms, more than 15 fiber carriers and liquid cooling for racks up to 150kW. The building will use air cooling and liquid cooling in a closed-loop system with free cooling for part of the year. In February 2025 the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development considered tax abatements for the Centra company behind the project, CADC Reno 265, LLC, worth an estimated $5.09 million over 10 years, on a planned $58.1 million in equipment spending and 11 jobs. The application said the company would use an air-based cooling system rather than a water-based one.

Some neighbors say they were never told. "Despite being a neighbor, I had no warning about the project and have received no information about impacts to air, water and noise pollution, which are going to impact my neighborhood as well as Reno High School," Tara de Queiroz said in April 2026, when she urged the city to consider a ban. "I think there's a lot of concerns with sound, a lot of concerns with water, with how close it is to the river," resident Allison Hartmann told 2 News Nevada; she said she lost her job after posting TikTok videos about the Keystone project and that it seemed some contractors had called to get her fired. Cullin McGinnis of the Sierra Club's Toiyabe Chapter objected that it is "right on the river, and also that it was approved before there were regulations on the books."

The backlash produced a pause. On June 1, 2026 the Reno City Council voted 6-1 to keep a moratorium on accepting, processing and approving new data center applications until August 31, 2027 or until the city adopts data center rules, with Councilmember Kathleen Taylor voting no. Data centers already built or under construction, including the Keystone Data Center and the recently approved Oppidan Data Center, are not affected. "They're looking for certainty," said Councilmember Devon Reese, who asked for the extension. Councilmember Meghan Ebert insisted the pause be tied to new regulations: "My community does not have trust that this body will follow through on any promises." Mayor Hillary Schieve said the city will also "have to address how we are going to deal with the existing ones."

In the 18 months before the pause, Reno approved three data centers, run by Colovore, Oppidan and Centra, all smaller than others in the state. In January 2025 the council also upheld a conditional use permit for the Webb Data Center in the North Valleys, and that March it approved the Oppidan Data Center. Officials in rural Humboldt County have taken initial steps toward a moratorium of their own.

City planning staff are drafting rules on about a dozen topics, including noise, air quality, water, energy use, fire and building safety and community benefit agreements, and the Reno City Council will vote on them. Tax breaks for data centers are offered by the state, not the city, a senior city planner noted. Centra's own site gives a fourth-quarter 2026 date.
