DataOne is building an AI data center for Nebius off South Lincoln and Sheridan avenues in Vineland, and the state has just fined it. On September 22, 2026 the Department of Environmental Protection fined DataOne $1.07 million for installing 62 gas generators, each about 2 megawatts, without air permits, and gave it 45 days, until about November 6, to get permits or stop running them. Nebius, which has a $17.4 billion deal with Microsoft, says the campus can grow to 300 megawatts of power.

Neighbors have complained for months of a constant hum and metallic whine, and filed a class-action lawsuit that says the county health department cited DataOne in March for nighttime noise. "It's just constant. It never goes away," said Andrew Groetsch, who lives less than a mile away. In August the city issued stop-work orders after crews began building a liquefied natural gas tank and moved fuel cells on site before approval. DEP Commissioner Ed Potosnak called the fine "by far the largest ever taken against a data center in New Jersey."

DataOne says the generators are temporary until Bloom Energy fuel cells, which it says are approved, become the permanent power source, and that it will apply for the permits while disagreeing with the finding. The mayor and City Council president back the project, and the city approved a partial tax exemption as part of a five-year plan. DataOne says it will hire more than 200 permanent workers, and it has bought most of the homes a few hundred feet from the site for employees.

Millville, also in Cumberland County, went the other way. Its Board of Commissioners voted on May 19, 2026 to ban data centers, ending a proposed 2.6-million-square-foot campus that would have drawn 1.4 gigawatts, or 1,400 megawatts, at full capacity. The youth-led Climate Revolution Action Network organized residents and farmers against it. Construction in Vineland is due to finish in late December.
