Rockingham County's data center occupies a former Unifi yarn plant on Island Drive in Madison, which closed in 2025 after more than 30 years as production moved to Yadkinville and Central America. Enovum Data Centers, a Bit Digital company, paid $45 million for the nearly million-square-foot plant on about 95 acres, and its sister company WhiteFiber is converting it into an AI data center campus called NC-1. WhiteFiber says it has 99 megawatts secured from Duke Energy and could grow to 200 megawatts, with an eventual investment of more than $1 billion and at least 60 jobs.
Local officials welcomed it from the start. "Their planned investment of over $1 billion will be a tremendous boost to the county and town of Madison," said Kevin Berger, chairman of the county Board of Commissioners. In December 2025, WhiteFiber signed a 10-year, roughly $865 million deal with London-based Nscale for 40 megawatts of capacity at Madison, with Nscale set to start paying for the power in stages beginning in April 2026.

WhiteFiber's operations manager, Jonathan Collins, told a neighboring Yadkinville town board meeting in September 2026 that the company buys already-industrial-zoned buildings to reach the market faster, runs emergency generators "for one hour, once a week," and cools with outside air in a closed loop rather than large volumes of water. Residents at that meeting asked what happens to the retrofitted plant when the technology becomes obsolete, and what chemicals are used in the cooling loop.
