Data centers in Stutsman County, North Dakota: 1 project mapped

Stutsman County's one data center is Applied Digital's cryptocurrency hosting site about 7 miles north of Jamestown. No new data center is proposed in the county. On February 3, 2026, the County Commission unanimously adopted rules that keep any new data center at least 2 miles from any building and 3 miles from an existing data center.

The people living near the Applied Digital site shaped those rules. The first draft set a 1-mile setback, but when the county surveyed residents within 2 miles of the site, they reported problems with sound and light from it. "I thought, you see in those responses, it was very, very appropriate to put into the ordinance a 2-mile setback," said Tyler Perleberg, the county's zoning administrator, adding that some residents wanted it farther. The rules also require screening and security fencing, and may require road repair agreements during construction.

The county is also on the route of JETx, a high-voltage power line on 150-foot towers running 92 miles from a substation near Jamestown to one west of Ellendale, where Applied Digital is building an AI campus. State regulators granted the route permit in June 2026. Landowners had raised setbacks, eminent domain and "the potential for the line to be used for data centers." "We just never had a fair shake at any of this," said Lucas Wald of Edgeley. In July 2026 the North Dakota Supreme Court ruled that the townships and landowners who challenged the line's 2024 approval had no standing to do so.
