Data centers in Williams County, North Dakota: 3 projects mapped
Williams County has one working data center, Atlas Power's cryptocurrency mine west of Williston, and two large AI campuses planned around the city. Critical Data House's Project Fighting Pike, up to 455 megawatts of power at U.S. Highway 2 and the U.S. 85 bypass, won city approval in March 2025 but has not started building; the company now expects it to open in late 2028 or early 2029. Nixxy and Tachyon 9 announced a campus of up to 1,000 megawatts on about 620 acres, powered by its own gas turbines, with a first phase targeted for the second quarter of 2027.
Atlas Power is why many residents are wary. Neighbors in Judson Township sued Atlas and the county in 2023 over constant noise, saying it hurt their property values and quality of life. A settlement was reached in 2025, and in March 2026 Atlas's lawyer told the court the confidential payments to residents were being finalized; the mine keeps running as normal. At a September 14, 2026, open house in Tioga, state environmental officials said the air-cooled site had taken shortcuts that stricter zoning could have prevented.

Fighting Pike is delayed because the site, an abandoned housing development, belongs to more than 1,100 investors mostly in Malaysia and Singapore, and the company must serve each of them legal notice before it can get clear title. Its chief executive, Chris Hardin, says it will not be a bitcoin site: "The Atlas situation is truly a Bitcoin facility. It's not a data center." No public meetings have been held on the Nixxy campus.
About eight miles south of Tioga, the county granted Teton Digital's Project Trinity a use permit on appeal in 2025, but the county says Teton has never filed a complete application; a permit for Enerfore Digital expired on August 4, 2026. "My opinion is that there's more misinformation than quality accurate information," resident Tia Johnson said after the Tioga meeting. County Commissioner Beau Anderson said the county had updated its zoning rules "so that we have a better framework."
