Data centers in Trumbull County, Ohio: 1 project mapped
Hubbard Township has tried to get ahead of data centers before one arrives. On Feb. 10, 2026, trustees voted 2-1 to place a one-year moratorium on data centers entering the township, with Trustee Monica Baker abstaining without giving a reason, the Tribune Chronicle reported. Trustee Jason Tedrow said the zoning commission had wanted to ban the facilities outright but learned through the county planning commission that the township could not, so the township's attorney drafted a moratorium instead. "This will give us a 12-month window to allow our zoning commission to hopefully engage the public," Tedrow said.
By July 2026 a Massachusetts real estate developer had approached Hubbard Township trustees about a heavy-industrial property originally intended to be a landfill. Trustees said the project would be 100 to 300 megawatts of power and a $2 billion investment on 75 acres, and Tedrow said the developer would be willing to give the township between $10 million and $30 million. Tedrow called data centers a "net negative" and said the choice would be up to residents. Trustee Eric Lamb said draft zoning would cap noise at 42 decibels at property lines and limit building height to 25 feet.

Residents at the July meeting pushed back. "I will speak for myself and say that I would much rather pay higher taxes than open that door," said Melissa Wade, who also raised the closed Deer Creek Golf Course as a possible site; Tedrow has said that property is a city matter, not a township one. "But data centers, you let one in, and they all come," said resident Melanie Bolovich.
The county's largest data center project is in Lordstown, where SoftBank is working with OpenAI under the Stargate banner. When OpenAI announced five more U.S. Stargate sites in September 2025, it said SoftBank had broken ground in Lordstown on what it called "an advanced data center design which is on track to be operational next year," and that the Lordstown site and a second in Milam County, Texas, could scale to 1.5 gigawatts of power over 18 months.
Trumbull County also led the Mahoning Valley in signatures for Conserve Ohio's proposed constitutional amendment banning data centers over 25 megawatts, with 1,087 of the 7,388 sought as of June 2026. The campaign fell short of the statewide requirement for the Nov. 3, 2026 ballot and now aims for 2027.
