La Pine's City Council rejected a proposed 20-megawatt data center on May 27, 2026, ending months of public opposition. Bitcoin miner Boxminer had proposed the project on county-owned industrial land on Reed Road, promising up to 80 jobs and closed-loop cooling that neither consumes nor discharges water. On March 25 the council had voted, in what it called a non-binding step, to start a purchase-and-sale process for the site; Deschutes County, which owns the land, would also have had to agree.
Nearly 100 people packed a May 13 meeting where the data center was not even on the agenda; public comment ran nearly three hours, almost all of it opposed. "We'll be pulling from the same stressed aquifer," said resident Zachary Kraus. A petition drew about 750 signatures. On May 27 the council voted unanimously to reject the land sale after City Manager Geoff Wullschlager raised questions about the developer's job and revenue estimates. "We do listen to you because we live here as well," Council President Cathi VanDamme told the crowd.
