Data centers in Cabell County, West Virginia: 1 project mapped

Cabell County's data center is a downtown office conversion, not a campus, and nothing has been reported about it since it was announced. On Oct. 30, 2024, at Huntington City Hall, Doug Tate, founder of Alpha Technologies, a Hurricane, W.Va., IT company, announced he would turn the former Appalachian Power Company building at 1125 Sixth Avenue into a 60,000-square-foot Tier III data center and company headquarters. Work was to start that November, with the first phase finished by March 2025, backing up Alpha's existing data center in South Charleston and employing 30 to 35 people, with a training center on the top floor.

The city made it possible. Two weeks before the announcement, Mayor Steve Williams said, the council passed an ordinance allowing the city to do business with data centers, something its code had not previously covered. The center is meant to anchor Thundercloud, the city's open-access fiber project, an 11-mile underground backbone from Barboursville to downtown. Brad Kalinoski, a Cabell County native and visual effects supervisor, said faster internet could bring him back to the area: "Yeah, I'd consider it for sure because I've always had that dream."

No opposition to the project was reported; it is a building conversion inside the city. The investment is given as $10 million by several outlets and as more than $20 million over several years by Tate. Alpha has since rebranded as Alpha Innovations. Whether the first phase opened in March 2025, how many people now work there and how much power it draws have not appeared in any later report.
