Hanoi's biggest data centers are in Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park on the city's outskirts, and they belong to the state telecom groups. In April 2024 the military-run Viettel opened a 30-megawatt data center there, covering 21,000 square meters with more than 60,000 servers, the largest of its kind in Vietnam, The Investor reported. VNPT had opened its VNPT IDC Hoa Lac center, 2.3 hectares with room for 2,000 racks of servers, in the same park in October 2023.
The Japanese firm NTT has run a data center in the capital since 2009 in partnership with VNPT. At the Viettel opening, Information Minister Nguyen Manh Hung welcomed Viettel's plan for at least three more data centers with a combined 240 megawatts. Viettel's Hoa Lac center was the first in Vietnam to commit to getting 30% of its power from renewable sources.
Power is the limit. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City together have about 73 megawatts of data centers running and 137 more planned by 2030, and a 100-megawatt project in either city faces a wait of two to three years for new power supply, according to a report carried by VnExpress International in August.
